On the Analysis of Seizure Onset in the Eeg: the Application of Constrained Ica
نویسنده
چکیده
Epileptic seizures are commonly studied using the electroencephalogram (EEG) for the measurement of brain electrical signals, which often show characteristic seizure waveforms. The automatic extraction of this seizure waveform from the recorded data has many implications, including the possibility of a real time system to warn the patient of an impending seizure. Such detection has hitherto proved difficult because of the non-stationarity of seizure waveform and corruption of the EEG signals by artifacts and other waveforms present in the measurements. We demonstrate the use of the recently published constrained independent component analysis (cICA) algorithm for the extraction of seizure waveform from EEG recordings, from time periods prior to the clinical onset of the seizure.

Optimized Seizure Detection Algorithm: A Fast Approach for Onset of Epileptic in EEG Signals Using GT Discriminant Analysis and K-NN Classifier
Background: Epilepsy is a severe disorder of the central nervous system that predisposes the person to recurrent seizures. Fifty million people worldwide suffer from epilepsy; after Alzheimer’s and stroke, it is the third widespread nervous disorder. Objective: In this paper, an algorithm to detect the onset of epileptic seizures based on the analysis of brain electrical signals (EEG) has b...
متن کاملConstrained Ica for Seizure Onset Analysis in the Eeg
The extraction of epileptic seizure waveform from the electroencephalogram (EEG) using Independent Component Analysis (ICA) was demonstrated by James and Lowe. A recent variation, Constrained ICA, allows a supplied reference signal to select a single component to be extracted. We show how this algorithm can be applied to the problem of seizure waveform extraction from EEG signals prior to the v...
متن کاملImaging haemodynamic changes related to seizures: Comparison of EEG-based general linear model, independent component analysis of fMRI and intracranial EEG
BACKGROUND Simultaneous EEG-fMRI can reveal haemodynamic changes associated with epileptic activity which may contribute to understanding seizure onset and propagation. METHODS Nine of 83 patients with focal epilepsy undergoing pre-surgical evaluation had seizures during EEG-fMRI and analysed using three approaches, two based on the general linear model (GLM) and one using independent compone...
متن کاملA review on EEG based brain computer interface systems feature extraction methods
The brain – computer interface (BCI) provides a communicational channel between human and machine. Most of these systems are based on brain activities. Brain Computer-Interfacing is a methodology that provides a way for communication with the outside environment using the brain thoughts. The success of this methodology depends on the selection of methods to process the brain signals in each pha...
متن کاملNewborn EEG Seizure Detection Based on Interspike Space Distribution in the Time-Frequency Domain
This paper presents a new time-frequency based EEG seizure detection method. This method uses the distribution of interspike intervals as a criterion for discriminating between seizure and nonseizure activities. To detect spikes in the EEG, the signal is mapped into the time-frequency domain. The high instantaneous energy of spikes is reflected as a localized energy in time-frequency domain. Hi...
